2009 :  Unfortunately, as is the case in many “Up & Coming” destinations such as Cape Verde, where the government focus is to improve standard of living for the indigenous population, funding is rarely available for animals.

Up until now, controlling the numbers of street dogs and cats has been achieved through Strychnine poisoning, a very cost effective but not particularly humane method, which sometimes claims domestic pets as victims as well. After several members of the community met together locally, a petition was raised and signed by many nationalities, including Cape Verdeans, and taken to the Minister of the Environment in Sal in order to introduce some more humane animal control methods so we have decided to proceed with the following programme through local fundraising.

· To provide funding for a responsible programme of neutering

·We have secured 6 – 8 Veterinary Surgeons to come to Sal in July and August to carry out a neutering programme for free on all the Cats and Dogs on Sal.

·To ban the use of poison for animal population control, including heavy fines for anyone caught poisoning animals

· We are awaiting news from the government on legalisation to prosecute anyone caught poisoning animals.

·To provide land to construct an animal sanctuary

· We have secured premises for our clinic from Mr Tony Nascimento.

Sal Animal Rescue is currently sourcing medical equipment required for the neutering as well as standard pet products such as flea powder, eye/ear drops, anti-biotics etc.  We are also looking for donations to help pay for the flights for the Veterinary Surgeons and a fund to provide ongoing medical attention for the street dogs and cats as required.

The Worldwide Veterinary Service

The Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVA) has very generously donated medical essentials for the treatment of the animals to the value of £1500 for Sal Animal Rescue.

We held a monster Auction on June 27th in Turtle Shack, we auctioned off many items.

Thanks to everyone that turned up, donated items and services and bid on items. Funds will go towards treating animals and easing the suffering of many street animals.Thank you for your Support.
